The Folding Space Conduction Ensemble, based in Santa Fe, NM, explores the Conduction Lexicon established by the late maestro Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris which he passed on to the great J.A. “Dino” Deane. Dino, who passed away in 2021, founded New Mexico’s Out of Context ensemble – the longest lived and deepest developed Conduction ensemble ever established. Carlos Santistevan, who played bass in and also provided electronics for Out of Context for over 10 years, was gifted a deep knowledge and understanding of the works and legacy of Morris and Deane during his tenure. Shortly before his passing, Dino entrusted the archives of Out of Context to Santistevan, who has since digitized and studied over 100 rehearsals, culling from the many recordings in order to release a series of Out of Context LP’s in order to preserve Dino’s legacy. The first LP, from the High Mayhem Festival in 2006, will be released at this concert. Santistevan has also now taken up the baton to serve as Conductor so the Conduction Lexicon will remain active and vibrant as evidenced by the founding of The Folding Space Conduction Ensemble in 2024. This special tribute brings together the two ensembles in celebration of Deane’s legacy. It’s Carlos Santistevan, conductor; John Flax, text; David Forlano, electronics/ sampling; Katie Harlow, cello; Rosie Hutchison, violin; Marya Errin Jones, vox/electronics; Sean Kennedy, tuba; Keely MacKey, cello; Alex Neville, electric bass; Joseph Sabella, vibes; Catherine Sikora, sax/flute; Ben Tempchin, electric guitar; Alicia Ultan, viola; and Milton Villarrubia III, drums/ percussion.

Dino’s Safe Haven Concert Series was created upon the passing in July 2021 of renowned sound designer, composer-improviser and long-time New Mexico resident, J.A. Deane (“Dino”), who bequeathed a generous gift of his “Safe Haven Tiny Home” to Outpost to support the work of like-minded artists.
