Led by legendary drummer, Barry Altschul, whose playing spans the history of jazz from hard bop to free jazz, 3Dom Factor features widely acclaimed, long-time Altschul collaborators, bassist Joe Fonda and saxophonist Jon Irabogon. Playing with unmatched energy and excitement the music of 3Dom factor is drawn from the entire jazz cannon and is a composite of original compositions from Barry Altschul and as well as from Fonda & Irabogon and the American song book. Barry Altschul and the 3 Dom Factor trio has been described as “a complete American music experience.” A student of Charlie Persip in the 1960’s, Barry Altschul is best known for his work in the 1970’s with groups ranging from Paul Bley’s to the legendary cooperative ensemble, Circle (Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Anthony Braxton) to accompanying Art Pepper, Lee Konitz, and many more. After the mid 1980’s he was rarely seen performing until his re-emergence in the 2000’s with groups such as 3Dom Factor and others. Speaking of their 2012 release, a reviewer for NPR’s Fresh Air commented: "Altschul is great at mixing opposites: abstract melodic concepts with parade beats, open improvising and percolating swing. The album is the sort of comeback that reminds you how much good music the artist made the first time around.” In an article for All About Jazz Mark Corroto wrote: "The trio spins a mixture of inside and outside playing... Where another drummer would surrender time to free jazz, Altschul keeps the music rooted between post-bop and free.” Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear Barry Altschul who, at age 82, remains as creative and swinging as ever.
Barry Altschul 3Dom Factor will also perform in Santa Fe on Wednesday, September 17 at Entropy Gallery.
