Black Sea Hotel Workshop
Tickets are $21, $16 for students (plus $1 service charge).
Balkan song is an incredibly rich and varied oral tradition that has been passed down through countless generations. In Bulgaria singing accompanied every aspect of life; work and play, happiness and sadness. Those familiar with its sound know that it embodies great emotional intensity, and resonates with people the world over.
In this workshop the members of Black Sea Hotel will help you to open up your voice to find the natural placement used in this music. You will learn about the harmonic and rhythmic structures (most often the music is in odd meters), and will learn songs which exemplify different styles.
This workshop is open to all levels. Previous experience and sight-reading are not required. The workshop will be taught orally, but sheet music and lyrics will also be provided. Recording devices are welcome.
Duration: an hour and a half.
Black Sea Hotel is a New York based Balkan a cappella trio that has worked with many of the great Balkan master artists to develop their unique repertoire. With reverence to the arranging styles in the canon, the trio recreates traditional Balkan music, generating their own inimitable, gutsy sound. Sometimes lyrical and ethereal, sometimes dissonant and driving, their distinct yet unified voices create a harmonic blend that has often been called haunting and otherworldly.
