Despite a heavy tour schedule, Hoots & Hellmouth have somehow found the time and energy to record two releases in the last year. Their latest, the full-length Salt, which showcases their forward-thinking roots/soul music, was recorded at Miner Street Studios in their hometown of Philadelphia, with engineer and friend Jon Low (Dr. Dog, Sharon Van Etten, Twin Sister). The evolution of the band is captured on the album, showing their commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring new sonic territory. Building on the fresh foundation of their Face First In The Dirt EP, Hoots & Hellmouth continue down their path of explosive creativity.
Salt kicks off with the same building intensity and passion of their live performances, punctuated with well-placed piano and electric guitar flourishes. They follow it up with their familiar soul vibe, stomping grooves, and call-and-response vocals. Dynamic and deep, the release proves that they aren't content to rest, and would rather continue to work hard. This is evidenced even further by their vibrant and massive group sing-alongs that evoke the chills of their live show. Throughout, it's clear that Sean Hoots is focused on his songwriting craft, revealing more depth and vulnerability for a personal side never heard on previous releases. The band's true passion, however, is in touring, playing all manner of venues to share their music with as many people as possible.
