The Hackensaw Boys, Buster Blue

The Hackensaw Boys first began playing their joyful blend of old-time and bluegrass-tinged string-band music on the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia in the autumn of 1999. Far from limiting themselves to the old-time canon, however, the Hackensaws have been first and foremost a band of songwriters. Their music, while drawing upon the spirit of the mountains, is sophisticated and informed by the best elements of punk rock and classic country music. As one reviewer put it: “Imagine the Carter Family meets the Ramones and you begin to get the picture.”

Buster Blue's eclectic sound jumps from breezy folk pop to loud unhinged rock and sounds like it belongs in an illicit speakeasy retrofitted for the new millennium. Everything musical may have been done before, but Buster Blue has found a niche inhabited by their off-kilter creation alone. The five band members all play multiple instruments from an arsenal that includes banjo, accordion, trombone and chain-links, along with the traditional guitar/bass/drums combo. Instruments are passed around, with some members learning a few they never even knew before.
