7pm: DANCE/MIRIAM by Nora Chipaumire
with 6:30pm Pre-and 8pm Post-Performance DISCOURSE/Identity & Expectation
Receptions/discussions with JOURNEYS dance artists led by writer/poet Hakim Bellamy
JOURNEYS in Dance and Discourse presents two-time Bessie Award-winning artist Nora Chipaumire, who returns to Albuquerque in her first character-driven work. Miriam is a deeply personal dance-theater performance that reverberates with tensions between public expectations and private desires, between objectification and power and between darkness and light, an immersive experience of being an outsider, requiring the engagement of all five senses. The audience is invited to stay after the performance for a panel discussion/reception with the artists and Albuquerque Poet Laureate Hakim Bellamy.
The troubled history of her native Zimbabwe...the stereotypes of Africa and the black female body...In MIRIAM Ms. Chipaumire gives voice to those imaginings in spoken text, grunts, ululation and dance.
