Copper & Congress is Katie Haverly (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Corey Cottrell (guitar, vocals), Kai Lindstedt (drums), and Patrick Morris (bass). The Tucson, Arizona based band combines elements of indie-rock, alternative, jazz, and folk styles to create an intimately raw yet palatable pop sound. Copper & Congress will be releasing their first album, The Leap Year, on July 20 at Plush in Tucson.

After singing and performing for 13 years with varying band incarnations, Katie moved to Tucson from upstate New York in September of 2011, and discovered in just a few short months Kai, Patrick, and Corey from a series of informal, open mic collaborations. Since announcing their band name and lineup during a live KXCI performance in March 2012, Copper & Congress has quickly become engrained in the Tucson music scene.

With the support of 116 Kickstarter backers, Copper & Congress was able to record their first record at the legendary WaveLab studios with Craig Schumacher as their producer and feature on the album performances by Calexico members Joey Burns and Jacob Valenzuela. The band’s intimate, and wide-ranging musical tastes and backgrounds underlie the intricately arranged songs on The Leap Year, and the easy and synergistic energy between members is especially evident during live performances.

Copper & Congress is committed to their craft. The band is dually focused on achieving technical perfection and conveying raw, emotional truth. Honoring their Tucson-inspired name, Copper & Congress strives to reflect the eclectic nature of their native music scene by combining the bluesy, country, and Americana sounds of artists like Lucinda Williams and Ryan Adams, with the rawness of classic alternative acts like Pearl Jam, and the alternative/moody sounds of artists like Feist and Zero 7. Throughout The Leap Year, the intricate, energetic music combines with Haverly’s poetic and revelatory lyrics and transcendent voice. According to Haverly, “The album feels like a journey. It’s lots of stories weaving together to tell one big story.”

Katie Haverly - Lead vocals, guitar

Katie is a small and extremely adorable human, but don't let that fool you, because she packs an enormous voice. Her 13 years in music have lead her to many places, including Chicago, New York, Colorado, North Carolina, and Arizona, just as her catchy melodies and enthralling lyrics will lead you to many places, including that place where you get songs stuck in your head for days.

Corey Cottrell - Lead guitar, vocals

Corey, wielding tremendous celestial guitar abilities learned from the hallowed tomes of the Canadian occult, unleashes onslaughts of torrential solos with more finesse than a one-armed trapeze artist. Also: he was born with perfect diaphragm control.

Patrick Morris - Bass

Patrick does to the bass what Picaso did to painting, slapping us all into new paradigms, shapes and movements; no simple plastic forms are sacred, all is possible.

Kai Lindstedt - Drums

Because Kai has a beard, is a sophisticated mathematician, and emerged musically from the depths of metal as a young man, he creates a rhythmic experience that is thoughtful, complex and surprising.  And - if you watch him closely - you will be mesmerized by his show-stopping stick tricks that he has been refining ever since he could first start hitting things with sticks.
