Väsen
Folk / Acoustic / Scandinavian
Vasen's music is sometimes described as "Celtic music from Scandinavia" but that doesn't begin to do it justice. Called simply " one of the best bands in the world..strong and powerful" by about.com, Vasen is said to tread" an enchanted territory between classical, folk and pop" by Utne reader. Featuring the nykelharpa, a Swedish keyed violin with resonant strings with a sound like no other, along with 5-string viola and six or twelve-string guitar (30 strings between them!), Vasen's music has a dizzying inticacy and complexity or haunting, simple beauty. Mixing lively polskas and other dance tunes with achingly beautiful slow tunes, their concerts are "at turns entrancing, enchanting,, uplifting, lilting, lovely and just plain fun"(Minnesota Star Tribune). They are also one of the funniest performing groups to boot, there is nothing quite like their Swedish humor between tunes. Once you hear them, you will never stop listening!
