Russell Scharf is arguably the busiest freelance trumpeter in New Mexico, and with good reason. Russell has performed with some of the finest musicians on the planet including members of the Pittsburgh and Chicago symphony orchestras, saxophone legend Chris Vadala, trumpet “heavyweight” Bobby Shew, and vocal phenomenon Bobby McFerrin. His schedule includes regular performances with Jazz Explosion, Tobias Rene, Las Vegas Event Bands, and New Mexican legends Nosotros. Russell’s work with Nosotros, which includes song writing as well as arranging and improvisation, has earned him awards from the New Mexico Musicians’ Fund for two consecutive years.
After graduating from Santa Fe High School, Russell attended Carnegie Mellon University, earning his degree in classical music and orchestral performance, with auxiliary studies in Conducting and Jazz. He then played for 6 months on cruise ships for Celebrity Cruise Lines, circumnavigating the globe, and sharing the stage with more than a few great artists. Since his return to New Mexico Russell has had the pleasure of working with artists covering the musical spectrum including Sparx, La Junta, and Tommy Gearhart, to name a few. In 2011 his debut jazz album “Jazz Explosion!” was released; a collection of songs created through the fusion of Jazz with Pop and Funk. Russell’s current musical projects include songwriting and performance in the Jazz, Pop, and Latin genres.
