“More Fun Than Fusion Has Any Right To Be” – Rhythm Magazine U.K.
Don’t call them a “supergroup”, because guitarist Guthrie Govan (Steven Wilson, Asia/GPS), bassist Bryan Beller (Joe Satriani/Steve Vai/Dethklok) and drummer Marco Minnemann (Adrian Belew/Necrophagist/Steven Wilson/Joe Satriani) aren’t just a high-powered muso one-off project. In just three years, they’ve put out three critically acclaimed albums, toured most of the world, and established themselves as one of the most musically original, refreshingly irreverent, and just plain entertaining instrumental rock/fusion acts out there right now. And they’re here to stay.
Currently the multi-national Aristocrats (Govan is British; Minnemann is German; Beller is American) are touring in support of their second studio release, appropriately named Culture Clash. The album debuted at #8 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts – in between John Scofield and The Yellowjackets, mind you – and while most wouldn’t classify their cheeky Zappa-meets-Mahavishnu-meets-Jeff Beck-meets-metal-meets-???? musical style as jazz, it is true that just about anything can happen onstage when The Aristocrats come to town.
“For all [their] frenetic virtuosity it’s always entertaining – thanks to a day-glo streak of surreal humor.” –Guitarist U.K.
