Jazz trumpeter Ron Helman lives in Galisteo and for some reason he works mostly in Santa Fe. When someone of Helman’s talent – he has burnished sound and boppist mode – keeps largely to venues in the City Different, there’s something wrong with this picture. Helman ought to be performing in jazz clubs in big cities. Maybe he will one day. Oh well, everyone has to start out some place.
Helman’s newest CD, a 11-cut collection of standards (“On Green Dolphin Street,” “You Don’t What Love Is” and “My Ship”) presents him mostly, and quite comfortably, with small ensembles.
With Helman are a crew of stand-up New Mexico artists who are equal to the trumpeter’s quality. The crew includes saxophonist Kanoa Kaluhiwa, bassist Louis Guerra, keyboardist (and the CD’s producer) Bert Dalton, guitarist Dimi DiSanti and drummers Ryan Anthony and Mark Clark.
All of the players contribute to make the CD live up to its name.
