Bayou Seco, featuring Ken Keppeler and Jeanie McLerie, has been entertaining New Mexico and many parts of the world since 1980. Recipients of the 2017 NM Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, Keppeler and McLerie have learned from a number of revered traditional  musicians in New Mexico, Louisiana and Arizona (thus, Bayou Seco). For this concert they team up with their band for what they describe as “a rollicking night of music where chugging accordions, soaring fiddles and exciting vocals will fill the Space.” Keppeler and McLerie have taught traditional southwestern music and dance to musicians at festivals, workshops, and camps around the world and the work they did with the New Mexico Artists in Residence Program allowed them to not only pass on what they had learned, but to give students a perspective on the music in their own families and communities. Tonight, in a rare Albuquerque appearance, they are joined by long-time collaborators, Scott Mathis, mandolin, guitarron, voice; Linda Askew, guitar; Terry Bluhm, bass; Jefferson Voorhees, percussion; and Rosalind Hutchinson, fiddle; with Keppeler on 1 and 3 row diatonic accordions, fiddle, harmonica; banjo and voice and McLerie on 5 string fiddles, guitar and voice. The evening will feature a special appearance by vocalist and accordionist, Antonia Apodaca, one of New Mexico’s most beloved traditional musicians.
