Not your ordinary cook-off – lots of good information
This cook-off has some peculiarities that you won’t find at most cook-off. But hey, Luckenbach is peculiar in its own special way, right? Read on for some “heads-up” information.
- With the exception of the parking lot (and Krieger’s Field above the parking lot), Luckenbach is covered by a TABC license that prohibits the display or consumption of hard liquor, so don’t bring any into the cooking area or Luckenbach proper. Not to worry, though. Luckenbach sells a good variety of bottle beer and wines. Each registered chili cook will be provided 5 discount beverage coupons to be used at a Luckenbach bar during the cook-off, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. If you wish to bring your own libations, you may drink them in the parking lot outside the gate and in your camping area after the cook-off.
- Chili cooks may camp out the entire weekend in Krieger’s Field (above the main parking area) Friday night through Sunday morning. If you wish to hear Charlie Robison perform on Saturday night, you will need to buy a ticket. Luckenbach is going to provide you and a guest tickets at the reduced price of $10.00 each if you want to go and enjoy the show. Otherwise, you may stay in the parking lot Saturday night. By the way, there will be some free music provided on Friday night!
- Registration is going to take place the day of the event; there will be no more online registration. Luckenbach will have on hand folks to guide you to the cook-off area and registration table upon arrival. For those of you who pre-registered, don’t worry; we have your pre-registration and payment information.
- Cook-off spaces: Unlike most other cook-offs, because of the huge number of spectators expected for the Mud Dauber Festival, cook sites are assigned to cooks upon registration; first come, first served. Each space is 15’ by 15’ (like the spaces were for Chilympiad many years ago). If you want to cook with a significant other or buddy, you may do so, but you need to stay within the 15’ by 15’ space. Thanks in advance for your help with this.
- Because of the large amount of spectator traffic expected, cooks are to off-load their gear and stuff, then move your vehicle out of the cooking area by 10:00 am. You may unload your equipment yourself, or someone from Luckenbach will be happy to help you with this. Tear down and load out may begin at 3:45.
- People’s Choice award: Please bring lots of extra chili to share with the public. Luckenbach will be selling tasting cups and spoons to the public for sampling chili from 12 noon to 3:30, with all the proceeds going to the ALS Society. They will be given tokens that they can give it to the cook whose chili they enjoy the most. The cook with the most tokens will win the People’s Choice award. Good luck! (Hint: The more chili you have, the better your chances are of winning.)
- Showmanship: You may enter Showmanship if you enter the sanctioned chili contest. Showmanship will be judged on theme, set-up, action, costume (if any) and audience participation. Lewdness, nudity, and use of alcohol as part of your show are not allowed. A complete list of Showmanship rules are available at the website listed below.
- Think you want to try your hand at cooking chili like the cowboy range cooks did while on cattle drives? Well, here’s your chance. Get in touch with Jack Potter for details about this event. Jack can be contacted by e-mail at Jack@RepublicTequila.com.
- Campfires may be OK if there is no burn ban in place.
- Each chili space needs to have a ring a fire extinguisher, just in case.

Time was – and not so long ago--that country was strictly working man’s music. Working women, too, of course--and we’re talking hard work here. Knuckle-busting, foot flattening, slow-to-get-up, work that has ya leaving (and returning) home in the dark in a dinged-up pickup…
