Due to popular demand, this will be the second performance of "Music of the Spheres." This exciting performance takes place during the weekend of June 14-16, 2019 and in conjunction with the Second Annual Interplanetary Festival of the Santa Fe Institute.

SUMMARY

This exciting project has come together through more than a year of collaborative effort! Astrophysicist and New Mexico Bach Society vocalist Dr. Patricia Henning has teamed up  with NMPAS Artistic Director Franz Vote and Executive Director Linda Marianiello to create a program that stands at the intersection of music and astrophysics.

Dr. Henning and her students have discovered more than 1,000 new galaxies in the course of their work. Together with Franz Vote and in conjunction with the Santa Fe Institute's "Second Annual InterPlanetary Festival", NMPAS offers a program that combines Johann Sebastian Bach's "Art of the Fugue" and other "universal" musical works of art with slides of newly discovered galaxies and artworks by Santa Fe multi-media and fabric artist Joyce Melander-Smith.

The program is based on the theme "Music of the Spheres," a term that was coined by the 17th-century German astronomer Johannes Keppler (1571-1630). In addition to movements from Bach's "Art of the Fugue," in an arrangement for 9 instruments by Samuel Baron, which he completed for the original Bach Aria Group, there will be solo vocal music and an arrangement of Joseph Strauss's "Sphärenklänge" (EN: Music of the Spheres) for vocal quartet and instruments, there will be a gorgeous slide show of newly discovered galaxies. Patricia Henning will provide oral program notes, and there will readings from Shakespeare on the topic as well.

Two performances take place on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 3 pm and 7 pm. Please watch the NMPAS website (nmpas.org) for more details as they become available.

PLEASE NOTE: For this very special set of 2 performances, there are no Senior or Family discounts for premium seating. All regular tickets are for open seating in Rows 5-12 in the Congregation and additional seating at the sides of the Altar.
