He played with Silver from 1956 until 1959 after which he joined Cannonball Adderley with whom he appeared on timeless recordings through 1965. He played with pianist Oscar Peterson from 1965-67 during which time he and bassist Sam Jones became known as the "dynamic duo", recognized as the most powerful rhythm duo in jazz. Hariprasad Chaurasia continues to carve a niche for himself in Indian Classical Music as a master of the “simple yet extremely difficult to play” Bansuri (bamboo) flute. Much like his uncle, Rakesh “possesses the right balance of strength and serenity, very critical factors for an exceptional flautist” and he has performed all over the world, including at prominent festivals like WOMAD in Athens, ‘Festivals of India’ in Russia, and more. He has recorded with most of the leading stalwarts of the Indian film industry, and, along with his Grammy awards, has been the recipient of many honors, including the 2007 Indian Music Academy Award given by the President of India and the Nakshatra Samman 2024 by TV9 Network in entertainment and music. It is where jazz artists go to “cut their chops,” to experiment, to spread their improvisatory wings, and to gain ensemble experience.  It is the essential cradle of spontaneity, invention, inspiration.  Listening to a jam session, one might never know if the artists had played together before or if they even knew one another, but that doesn’t matter—because they all know the basic rules!  How does this work?  How does one learn the universal language, the rules, the protocols of jamming together?  Where does one start?  In this course, we will de-mystify, and prepare you for jamming with other jazz lovers.  Using standard tunes that are part of the standard jazz repertoire, we will learn how to approach and dive into jazz charts, how to communicate with others in the ensemble, how to know when to “comp” and when to “solo” and many more spoken an unspoken rules of the JAM SESSION.  Singers, players, all levels welcome.  Let’s jam!

This new class welcomes adult musicians at a beginning level and youth at any level. Both must just be able to play their  instrument. Just as in the adult jazz classes taught by Kanoa Kaluhiwa, participants in this mixed ages class will learn 3 to 5 tunes by ear (mostly jazz but not limited to jazz) with a focus on learning the melody, harmony and rhythm, as well as an opportunity to try out short portions of solos. Participants will do some reading of charts written by Kanoa or excerpts of solos, as well as other play-along books. They will discuss each of the main elements that make up a jazz (or other) composition: melody, harmony and rhythm, as well as listen to the original recordings of the tunes.
One of New Mexico’s most sought-after saxophonists, tenor saxophonist Kanoa Kaluhiwa started playing professionally while in High School and received two scholarships to the Eastman School of Music summer Sessions in New York. He also studied for two years at the Berklee School of Music in Boston.
