Her performing background was forged in oral tradition amidst a large musical family in Spokane, Washington and continued with studies in music theater, rock bands, Action Theater, Polish theater and ethnomusicology. At home, her parents played romantic, impressionistic melodies on the piano via Bartok and Debussy. There was summer theater, dance contests in the living room, and early exposure to rock, psychedelia, punk and metaphysics. Her coming-of-age years were spent largely holed up with field recordings of African & Swiss music scoured from the Spokane Public Library and taking anthropology classes. The vocalist Shannon McNally, along with New Orleans musical legend Mac “Dr. John” Rebennack have made a new LP to try and shine a spotlight on Charles’ body of work. Small Town Talk is an album of songs by the great but under-appreciated American songwriter Bobby Charles, which features guest performances by Derek Trucks, Will Sexton, Luther Dickinson, and Vince Gill. Originally a solo project, collaborators now include Mark Barry (percussion, vocals), Miguel Briseno (bass, percussion) and Tom Renaud (guitar, vocals). Ben Schneider was born in Michigan and started playing music as a child, on his father's acoustic guitar. The senior Schneider wasn't a musician by trade, but he had learned a bit during his downtime on ships in the Navy. Schneider's father would bring the instrument out from time to time most often on summer nights around the campfire up on Lake Huron to strum and hum the songs he knew. After learning the basics, Schneider began his formal training in the school orchestra. He played upright bass and fiddled with many other instruments, both acoustic and electric, and began recording original music on a four-track cassette machine. Schneider studied art in college and lived in France and New York before moving to Los Angeles in 2005 to pursue a career in the visual arts.
