Emmylou Harris first heard Rodney Crowell's music 40 years ago when her producer, Brian Ahern, played her a demo recording of one of Crowell's songs: "Bluebird Wine." "From that first bar of music, I just knew. It was the bomb," recollects Harris. "Bluebird Wine” became the opening track of her 1975 Top Ten country debut, Pieces of the Sky. Crowell went on to become rhythm guitarist and harmony singer in her now legendary Hot Band, and he soon landed his own solo deal with Warner Bros., releasing his Ahern-produced debut, Ain't Living Long Like This, in 1978. Harris would quickly be recognized as one of the finest young song interpreters on the nexus of country, folk, and rock, and Crowell himself would become a sought-after songwriter, producer, and performer, whose work would be covered by Johnny Cash, the Grateful Dead, Etta James, and Bob Seger,…

This event is a benefit for the Roadrunner Food Bank. We will be collecting cash and non-perishable food item donations at the show.
Richard Thompson's [web site | Amazon.com] latest album, Electric, produced by Buddy Miller, comes in what is arguably his most creatively productive period in a career that stretches back some 45 years, back to his emergence as a teen guitarist and songwriter with the groundbreaking Fairport Convention—the band that essentially invented the term "English folk-rock." And that's saying a lot, with his dozens of albums consistently high on critics' polls and guitar skills that have earned him a Top 20 spot on Rolling Stone's list of Best Guitarists of All Time.
The recognition continues and has become even stronger in the last few years: his long-acclaimed guitar work—piercing, delicate, often both at once—brought him MOJO magazine's Les Paul Award; his equally gripping songwriting earned him the 2012 Americana Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to him by Bonnie Raitt, and Britain's coveted Ivor Novello Award; and he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Aberdeen University in his ancestral Scotland. Often referred to as "The Hendrix of the Sahara," Vieux Farka Toure [web site | Amazon.com] was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Toure, who died in 2006.
Ali Farka Touré came from a historical tribe of soldiers, and defied his parents in becoming a musician. When Vieux was in his teens, he declared that he also wanted to be a musician. His father disapproved due to the pressures he had experienced being a musician. Rather, he wanted Vieux to become a soldier. But with help from a family friend, the kora maestro Toumani Diabaté, Vieux eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing to become a musician shortly before Ali passed.

Components of his style are pulled from classical music, pop, folk, avant-garde, world music, and jazz. Cooke’s recordings also employ piano and percussion. The piano was his first instrument, which he began playing at age 5, and picked up the cello at age 11. Paying special attention to innovative meter, chord progression, and melody, the Denver-based musician breeds a truly original and moving type of music.
Cooke was voted the top musician in the 2009 Denver Post Underground Music Poll. Westword Magazine named him Best Avant Pop, as well as Best Album for 2007 for The Fall I Fell.
He has appeared in SPIN magazine, appeared on a Joanna Newsom covers album alongside Billy Bragg, M. Ward, and Owen Pallett, played the Toronto Pride Festival and Red Rocks, and has toured Australia and the US playing with The Dresden Dolls, Rasputina, Crooked Fingers, The Decemberists, Flaming Lips, and many more.

The 10th annual International Folk Art Market and ¡Globalquerque! proudly present world renowned Malian musicians Mamadou Kelly and the Ali Farke Toure Allstars, Tartit and Imharhan. Coming directly from Europe, this show will be the debut of The Festival au Desert: Caravan for Peace US tour and kick off the 2013 Folk Art Market.
Held in Mali for over a decade, The Festival au Desert has been cancelled as a result of civil war in that country. So, in 2013, instead of gathering in the Sahara, they are bringing the music of Mali out into the world. From soulful Malian Blues, to traditional trance-like nomadic music, to the intense, electric, modern sound of the Malian desert, this concert will be a stunning example of culture in motion, and an unforgettable opening for the 10th Annual International Folk Art Market.

Fanfare Ciocarlia are one of the world's greatest live bands, their energy and ingenuity having won them fans from Melbourne to Memphis, Tokyo to Toulouse. Having learned their craft at the feet of their fathers and grandfathers, Fanfare's members proudly approach every concert as a challenge to both entertain audiences and keep the true spirit of Gypsy music alive.

Southern California's Steve Poltz [web site | Amazon.com] is one of the most beloved songwriters of his generation. His music—as both a solo artist and with cult legends The Rugburns—has enjoyed long stretches in the Billboard top ten, gobbled up acres of mainstream radio and appeared in scores of television shows, commercials and movies. He has collaborated with everyone from Jewel to Glenn Tillbrook to Mojo Nixon, and his legendary live show has earned him a ferocious global fan base that makes soccer hooligans seem coquettish and reserved. In fact, X frontman John Doe once said, "My idea of hell would be having Steve Poltz open for me every day. There's no place left for the audience to go."

Born in Los Angeles in 1950, Tom Russell [web site | Amazon.com] has spent the majority of his life creating music in one genre or another. Having been steeped in Tex-Mex and cowboy music of the southwest, he is best known as a folk and country singer with a personal storytelling approach to his songwriting. Russell's past is checkered with interesting events that defy his country music roots, including his receiving a degree in criminology, teaching school in Nigeria, and playing music for a Puerto Rican circus.
Criminals and circuses aside, Russell has penned a number of well-received albums. As a taxi driver in Queens, Russell met guitarist Andrew Hardin, and the two soon formed a band. Russell and Hardin became the regular opening act for Robert Hunter of the Grateful Dead, and spent the 1980s releasing four albums under the Tom Russell Band moniker. In the 90s, he put out a series of solo albums; however,…

Matt and Shannon Heaton [web site | Amazon.com] have performed together from their first meeting in Chicago in 1991. Behind their Irish flute- and guitar-driven tunes and stirring songs is a deep well of mutual memories, setbacks, and triumphs.
Having built their act from years of touring together (first with the band Siucra, then as a duo), Matt and Shannon have grown into thoroughly entertaining performers. They bring to the stage a depth of shared experience and a love for Irish music; their stage banter is comfortable, often hilarious.
Scott Alarik of the Boston Globe wrote, "Their playing is masterful and inventive, their arrangements city-smart and spacious. Still, they never forget that Irish music is, at its heart, a neighborly form meant for sharing, not showing off."
Musically speaking, the Heatons play the heck out of their instruments (Irish wood flute/accordion, guitar/bouzouki). After years of study in Chicago, and many nights of music in Clare, Galway, and their adopted home of Boston, Irish Music Magazine's John O'Regan wrote, "their duet playing is tight, sweet, and tasteful, lacking nothing on either technical expertise or instrumental virtuosity."
As for their singing, when Matt and Shannon perform centuries-old songs, it feels current, conversational.…

After years of study in Chicago, and many nights of music in Clare, Galway, and their adopted home of Boston, Irish Music Magazine's John O'Regan wrote, “their duet playing is tight, sweet, and tasteful, lacking nothing on either technical expertise or instrumental virtuosity."
As for their singing, when Matt and Shannon perform centuries-old songs, it feels current, conversational.…

Kris Delmhorst [web site | Amazon.com] has built a thriving career and a devoted following from the ground up, and without major label hype. The same independence of spirit that led Delmhorst to spend some early years working on subsistence farms, cooking on a schooner off the coast of Maine, or hitch-hiking the back roads of Ireland with a fiddle on her back, is evident in the arc of her musical evolution: a willingness to work on her own terms and her own time. Along the way she's parlayed a decade of successful cross-country and trans-Atlantic touring into one of the most distinct voices in American music. The Steel Wheels [web site | Amazon.com] have captured audiences across the country with their heady brew of original soulful mountain music and their deep commitment to roots and community. Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, this dynamic four-piece string band marries old-time musical traditions with their own innovative sound and lifestyle, generating a truly magnetic revival.
The band is renowned for their raw energy and chemistry on stage, where they often cluster tightly around a single microphone to adorn Trent Wagler's unmistakable tenor with bell-clear four-part harmonies inspired by their shared Mennonite heritage. Add to this Eric Brubaker's lively and evocative fiddle, Brian Dickel's grounded yet buoyant upright bass, and Jay Lapp's signature mandolin style, and it's no surprise that The Steel Wheels have enthralled the contemporary Americana scene.

Ozomatli [web site | Amazon.com] has always juggled two key identities. They are the voice of their city, Los Angeles, and they are citizens of the world. Their music—a notorious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East L.A. R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga—has long followed a key mantra: it will take you around the world by taking you around L.A.
Originally formed to play at a Los Angeles labor protest over a decade ago, Ozomatli spent some of their early days participating in everything from earthquake prep "hip hop ghetto plays" at inner-city elementary schools to community activist events, protests, and city fundraisers. Reaching the national spotlight in 2002, pianist Vienna Teng [web site | Amazon.com] had been an important part of the California singer/songwriter scene for a few years before then. A pianist since the age of five, Teng took piano lessons before moving on to improvisation. Writing feverishly throughout her youth, she eventually had a full album's worth of instrumentals by the age of 16. Joe West & The Santa Fe Revue is an emotionally moving and, at times, hilarious musical commentary on the "offbeat" life of award-winning, Alternative Country singer-songwriter Joe West, accompanied by his longtime backing band with special guests. "Shortly after I returned to Santa Fe in the late 90s," says West, "it didn’t take me long to notice my old home town had become a hotbed for so many accomplished musicians. Recently, I’ve been fascinated with world of Mark Twain, Will Rogers and the era of old wild-west shows and traveling carnivals. Back then, for the price of just one ticket, the audience got to enjoy an amazing, amusing and sometimes bizarre range of entertainment. So with that idea in mind, I thought it would be a lot of fun to perform my music with the help of a rotating cast of the most talented, offbeat and interesting Santa Fe folks I know."

Carlos Núñez [web site | Amazon.com] is one of Galicia's most revered artists, undisputed as the tradition's greatest piper. He is also enormously popular across the rest of Spain and throughout Europe and Latin America. He is already known in Irish music thanks to his early "adoption" by The Chieftains (so close was his musical and personal connection he was dubbed "The Seventh Chieftain"). He played on many of the acclaimed Irish group's CDs including Treasure Island, The Long Black Veil, the Grammy-winning Santiago (inspired by Galician music), and Voice of Ages.
Núñez then launched his own solo career, starting with his 1996 debut, Brotherhood of Stars. With platinum sales in Spain, Brotherhood was a remarkable breakthrough for both Núñez and Galician music. His newest album, Discover, showcases the range and depth of this groundbreaking instrumentalist, who has taken Galician music to all corners of the world.
