"David Lynch meets Neil Young" says KJHK disc jockey Barry Lee, describing Forrest Whitlow's music. "Forrest writes and sings from the heart and it comes through in his performances." This mix of familiar and eclectic musical elements informs and drives the music of Forrest Whitlow, currently performing in support of his newest release, Sunrise in Reverse. Originally from Kentucky, Forrest Whitlow has been playing in his home base Kansas City for several years. He is a skillful, perceptive songwriter who has made a strong presence on the Kansas City music scene with his first four releases Vacation(1996), Love and Garbage(1998), Patch of Blue(2001) and the solo recording Into the Gloaming(2002). With his backing band The Crash, Forrest forged a unique sound that runs the gamut from introspective, country-tinged balladry to dark, loud, rough rock & roll workouts. The Land of X is a culmination of the group's explorations, a sprawling document that explores the darker side of the human psyche with tales of lust, murder and despair. Never a "one-note" band, Forrest & the Crash also manage to temper these edgy tales with the type of ornate balladry they are known for with songs like "Russian Gin" and the album's title track. In 2005, Forrest released Sunrise in Reverse, and has recently been performing with his new band, The Pickles. The Pickles's live show is an exciting mix of Forrest's older, folk-informed songs and the new, edgier material. The band tailors every performance to the venue and audience at hand, and they are comfortable performing on concert stages and in more intimate settings such as coffeehouses and smaller pubs. Regardless of the setting, Forrest Whitlow & The Pickles consistently provide a provocative mix of powerful, melodic rock music.
