Grammy-nominated composer and pianist, Vijay Iyer, (pronounced “VID-jay EYE-yer”) returns to Outpost with his trio, about which the New York Times wrote: “Presto! Here is the great new jazz piano trio.” Iyer was described by Pitchfork as "one of the most interesting and vital young pianists in jazz today," by the Los Angeles Weekly as “a boundless and deeply important young star,” and by Minnesota Public Radio as “an American treasure.” He was named DownBeat Magazine's 2014 Pianist of the Year, a 2013 MacArthur Fellow, and a 2012 Doris Duke Performing Artist. The New York Times observes, “There’s probably no frame wide enough to encompass the creative output of the pianist Vijay Iyer.” He has released twenty albums covering remarkably diverse terrain, most recently for the ECM label. His 2015 release, Break Stuff received a coveted five-star rating in DownBeat Magazine, and features the Vijay Iyer Trio, which PopMatters called “the best band in jazz.” Iyer has also collaborated with numerous with artists, iincluding Steve Coleman, Rudresh Mahanthappa, John Zorn, DJ Spooky, Karsh Kale, Mike Ladd, and Amiri Baraka and his compositions have been commissioned by Bang on a Can All-Stars, The Silk Road Ensemble, and many more. Also a scholar and educator, in 2014 he began a permanent appointment at Harvard University’s Department of Music, as the Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts. His long time trio mates, with whom he performs tonight, are Stephan Crump, bass; and Marcus Gilmore, drums.
