Outpost and PADMINI present an evening of Indian Classical Music by some of its finest young purveyors— Purbayan Chatterjee on sitar; Shashank Subramanyam, bamboo flute; Anubrata , tabla; and Parupalli Phalgun, mrdangam

One of the top sitar players performing today, Purbayan Chatterjee belongs to the famous Senia Maihar Gharana school established by Baba Allauddin Khan, the guru of such artists as Ustad Ali Akbar Khan  (sarod) and sitar players Pandit Ravi Shankar and Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. A multifaceted musician, he performs both North Indian and South Indian raga music, and participates in various jazz fusion projects earning respect among jazz greats, Chick Corea, Bela Fleck, and Pat Metheney. He has performed numerous times with the legendary Zakir Hussain and was the recipient of the President of India Award for Best Instrumentalist at the age of 15.  He is also an accomplished and esteemed vocalist. He received the prestigious Aditya Vikram Birla Award in Music. Chatterjee designed an instrument called the “Dwo,” a doppelganger of the Indian sitar which has been described as combining “the acoustic and the digital, the ancient and modern, the ethnic and urban, the esoteric and virtuosic, all of which complement each other and become one.” Chatterjee has led a number of ground-breaking projects, including his super-hit fusion album, Stringstruck, as well as his album Aman ki Asha, an Indo-Pak peace project which received the Palm IRAA Award for the Best World Music Album of the Year.  Shashank Subramanyam is a Grammy nominated exponent of the Bamboo flute. A child prodigy, he began performing at the age of 6 and has performed in the top concert circuit for over three decades. Son of the world-renowned tabla maestro, Pt. Anindo Chatterjee, Anubrata is the youngest and the last “Ganda-Bandh” disciple of the great guru, Padmabhushan-Deshkottam Jnan Prakash Ghosh. He made his debut as an accompanying artist with the legendary Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia and has since gone on to accompany legends of Indian Classical Music including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Pt. Shivkumar Sharma among others. On Mrdangam tonight, it’s Parpalli Phalgum.
