Vocalist Carla Van Blake, who was last heard at Outpost in the fall of 2016, as well as with trumpeter Bobby Shew in 2015, returns with her Simple Truth Jazz Band to perform a fresh combination of original tunes, uniquely arranged jazz classics by Micky Patten, and some improvisational numbers. Born in the Appalachian Mountains in the early 1950’s and raised in a remote area of West Africa, Van Blake’s culturally diverse musical influences are reflected in her songwriting, which embraces a wide variety of genres. Her band tonight features Steve Terwilliger, guitar; Lisa Nichols, flute; Phil Arnold, trombone and chromatic harmonica; Micky Patten, bass; and Pete Amahl, drums.  Guitarist Jim Casey brings the music of Wes Montgomery and Miles Davis to the Outpost, performing the songs off of his latest release, Miles Goes Wes, a project that he conceived as a tribute to his two musical heroes. Casey, who is originally from Texas, performs around New Mexico regularly with vocalist Hillary Smith and Chillhouse as well as with Michael Herndon’s funky jazz and R&B group, Got Soul at El Farol in Santa Fe every Thursday. Tonight he is joined by Brad Dubbs on trumpet; Glenn Kostur, saxophone and keyboards; Chris Ishee, keyboards; Artha Meaders, bass; and Mo Roberts, drums.
