Youngest of the three musical Heath brothers, Albert “Tootie” Heath’s first recording was with John Coltrane’s first as a leade. Tootie was also the last drummer for the Modern Jazz Quartet. From the 1950s on, he performed regularly with Don Cherry, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Art Farmer / Benny Golson, Friedrich Gulda, Tommy Flanagan, Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, J.J. Johnson, Yusef Lateef, Sonny Rollins, Bobby Timmons, Lester Young, Cedar Walton and Ben Webster. The “Whole Drum Truth” concept, which originated from Tootie, was to pay homage to many of the great drummers who contributed to history of jazz. According to John Trentacosta, “the current version of it has the advantage of many rehearsal hours. We actually have a program of many pieces we worked out together that are signature pieces by– Art Blakey, Ed Blackwell, Vernel Fournier, Max Roach and many others. We have build compositions around their stylistic contributions. Within a very structured format, we all have a chance to solo as we trade back and forth among one another. We play the rhythmic structure, minus the melody, of tunes written by some of the great jazz composers such as Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane. A real jazz aficionado can often recognize the tunes from the rhythmic structure alone.”

The Whole Drum Truth set will be followed by the Tootie Heath Trio with Bert Dalton,

and Special Guests, to be announced.
