Presented by the New Mexico Jazz Festival, in partnership with AMP Concerts

Free!

The New Mexico Jazz Festival is pleased to partner with AMP Concerts’ Santa Fe Plaza Concert Series (formerly known as Santa Fe Bandstand) to present one of New Mexico’s longest standing and most popular Salsa ensembles, Son Como Son, and the dynamic Rumba Flamenca duo, ReVóZo featuring Vicente Griego and Gabriel Osuna, who will open the evening.  Founded in 1993, Son Como Son, directed by renowned trombonist, vocalist, percussionist, composer, and arranger César Bauvallet, who moved from Havana, Cuba to Albuquerque in 1992, bills itself as Salsa Cuban Style. Performing regularly over the years to packed audiences comprising highly animated and dedicated salseros at the NM Jazz Workshop’s Salsa Under the Stars Series, The Cooperage (which, sadly, was recently torn down!), as well as at the Telluride Jazz Festival and other special appearances, Son Como Son features some of Albuquerque’s most accomplished and busiest musicians, most of whom have been with the band for at least 27 years! Along with Bauvallet on trombone and vocals, the band comprises Janet Harman, bass and vocals; Mary Wommack, piano and vocals; Víctor Rodríguez, vocals and bongos; Thomas White, drums and timbale; Ricky Carrido, congas; Lester Rodríguez, vocals; John Simms, trumpet and vocals; Kanoa Kaluhiwa, tenor saxophone. "Every single time, the band is explosive! Son Como Son—They are how they are. It basically means they aren't trying to be something they're not. They are original. They're the real thing. They are the reason why New Mexican dancers can't sit down when their music plays. Olé los buenos artistas." (Jesus Muñoz, Albuquerque Dance Examiner).

ReVóZo, which translates to “overflow - pouring out - spill over - abound - brim - bubble over” is one of several projects of flamenco singer Vicente Griego. ReVóZo A Dos, a more intimate version of the larger ReVóZo band directed by César Bauvallet, features Griego with guitarist Gabriel Osuna. Combining Flamenco puro and Rumba Flamenca traditions with elements of dance music, including Cuban Son, Reggae, Cumbia, Ranchera and Funk, ReVóZo’s musical offering is “magnetically danceable and unabashedly modern,” while also remaining true to its cultural roots. Vicente Griego hails from Dixon/Embudo, NM, and has devoted his life to the study of Cante Flamenco. He has toured the US, Canada, and Latin America In with the Jose Greco II Flamenco Dance Company, where he was mentored by Caño Roto singer, Alfonso Gabarri,“El Veneno” of Madrid, Spain, and also sings for Yjastros, the American Flamenco Repertoire Company out of AlbuRquerque. Osuna, who comes from a family of artists and musicians in New Mexico, studied flamenco guitar in Spain and abroad. Some of his mentors include Chuscales, El Viejin, Pedro Cuadra, Ramon Jimenez, Rafael Habichuela, and he has worked with a wide variety of vocal artists. He is featured on Consuelo Luz’ album, Dezeo, among other recordings, and has performed at festivals worldwide.  Osuna has participated regularly in “Festival Flamenco Internacionál” in Albuquerque and recently moved back to New Mexico after living and working in the Los Angeles area for the past several years.
