Some of you may have heard me announce the recent arrival of several well known experienced jazz musicians to Northern New Mexico. For our first in this series we’d like to present someone who has only been here just over a year and not only raised the performance bar, but has quickly become the busiest musician in our community. He is one of the most eclectic of modern piano players and his versatility and depth makes him the guy eveyone wants to share the bandstand with.
John Funkhouser has shared the stage with Joe Lovano, Steve Gadd, Charles Neville, Bobby Watson, Esperanza Spalding, Luciana Souza, Tierney Sutton, Geri Allen, Francisco Mela, Rudresh Mahanthappa, and Matt Savage. He has played on over 80 CD and video recordings, including five CDs and two video projects as leader. Funkhouser has performed at clubs and festivals all over the world, including the Blue Note, Birdland, and Dizzy’s in New York City, as well as the New Orleans Jazz Festival, Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, the Toulon Jazz Festival, and the Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival. He has toured extensively in North and Central America, as well as Europe, Southeast Asia, and South Africa. He has appeared on ABC’s “20/20,” NBC’s “Today Show,” and National Public Radio. He taught piano, bass, ear training and ensembles at Berklee College of Music in Boston from 2001-2021 and currently resides in Albuquerque, NM. The John Funkhouser Quartet made its New Mexico debut to a sold out crowd at The Outpost Performance Space in March of this year. SFMC would like you to join us in welcoming The John Funkhouser Trio, with Terry Burns on bass, and John Trentacosta on drums.
