Rescheduled twice now, we’re pretty sure the third time’s going to be the charm and we’re happy to be able to make this concert part of the 16th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival! Drummer Peter Erskine, tenor saxophonist George Garzone, pianist Alan Pasqua, and bassist Darek Oles – four giants of jazz improvisation— have known each other for many years and have played together often. In early January 2019, Erskine, Pasqua and Oles, all faculty members at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, were joined by Garzone at a new Los Angeles jazz club/listening room called Sam First, for what was to be an extraordinary three-night live summit that was recorded and released on Erskine’s own Fuzzy Music label as a 3-CD package entitled 3 Nights in L.A. The recording was described by Jim Worsley of All About Jazz as “... the epitome of live improvisational jazz, played with both freedom of expression and with pure joy,” while JazzWeekly.com wrote that the ensemble “adroitly mixes modern with tradition with an extra spice of inquisitiveness, sounding as fresh as the air outside after the rains.”
The Peter Erskine Quartet will also perform in Santa Fe at SITE Santa Fe for the Santa Fe Music Collective on Thursday, Sept 29 at 7pm at SITE Santa Fe and in Taos for the Taos Jazz BebopSociety on Friday, September 30 at 7pm in a New Mexico Jazz Festival affiliated events.
