Emmett Cohen and Tootie Heath return! Drummer and National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master Albert “Tootie” Heath, who has performed at Outpost numerous since making his home in Santa Fe, is a true jazz legend who has played with ALL the jazz greats. The last living member of the renowned Heath Brothers, Tootie played drums on John Coltrane’s first album as a leader and was the last drummer for the legendary Modern Jazz Quartet. He performed regularly with Don Cherry, Benny Golson, Tommy Flanagan, Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, and Cedar Walton, among others, and was last heard at Outpost with the Emmet Cohen Trio early last fall.  At the age of 88 years, he continues to perform regularly and returns to join the Emmet Cohen Trio once again. Voted the world’s 3rd best living jazz pianist in the DownBeat Reader’s Poll in December 2022. All About Jazz has called Emmet Cohen, “a supremely gifted and impassioned artist of the highest order.” He has performed, recorded and collaborated with everyone from Ron Carter, Benny Golson and Jimmy Cobb to Christian McBride and Kurt Elling. The winner of the 2019 American Pianists Award and the Cole Porter Fellow of the American Pianists Association, he was also a finalist in the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. In addition to leading his trio, Cohen has appeared regularly with Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Jimmy Cobb, George Coleman, Kurt Elling, Tootie Heath, Billy Hart, and several others. He headlines regularly at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Village Vanguard, and Birdland, as well as at renowned jazz festivals throughout the world. Rounding out the Emmet Cohen Trio is Philip Norris, bass.
