“A Love Supreme”
a Spiritual Suite by
John Coltrane
Decades after his death John Coltrane remains one of the most influential saxophone players in jazz. His landmark 1964 recording, A Love Supreme, is a four part through-composed suite depicting a deep searching spirituality and whole expression of his being. To this day this masterpiece transcends the remarkable career the tenor / soprano saxophonist had sewn to date, including his early “Sheets of Sound’ stylistic approach as exemplified in his long tenure with the First Great Quintet of Miles Davis, the enormous impact he had on modal jazz with the formation of The Classic John Coltrane Quartet, right up to his untimely death in 1967 at the age of 40. Coltrane was one of the greatest innovators jazz has seen in almost a century and this concert will include some of his earlier work in addition to the performance of the suite in its entirety. Come out and hear Alex Murzyn on tenor saxophone, Bob Fox on Piano, Terry Burns on bass and John Trentacosta on drums, present an entire evening of “COLTRANE”, as SFMC celebrates it’s second annual invitation to “Art + Sol, The Santa Fe Winter Arts Festival 2024”.
