When John Trentacosta first came to Santa Fe thirty two years ago he heard Paul Gonzales playing with Doug Lawrence at the old Outpost on Morningside. He knew right away that if this was the caliber of musician that New Mexico had to offer, he wasn’t going back to New York anytime soon.

Born in Albuquerque, Paul grew up surrounded by some of the finest musicians in the southwest. From his earliest days as a young trumpet player, Paul has possessed a beautiful warm sound that many jazz writers have compared to Chet Baker. Following a tour as principal jazz soloist in the U. S. Army Band stationed in New England, Paul went on to stack up an impressive list of playing credits with The Cab Calloway Orchestra, The Buddy Rich Alumni Band, Pete Escovedo, Carlos Patato Valdes, Doug Lawrence, and Bobby Shew. He has appeared at The Newport Jazz Festival, The New Mexico Jazz Festival, and The Telluride Jazz Festival. In addition to all that, Paul has played in groups with George Cables, Louis Hayes, Tadataka Unno, and Jimmy Cobb, and is a long standing featured soloist of The Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra. In an effort to bring more Albuquerque jazz talent up to Santa Fe, SFMC will be featuring Paul Gonzales in concert at “Club Legato” on Saturday, March 2nd, along with Bob Fox on piano, Cyrus Campbell on bass, and John Trentacosta on Drums. So come on out and celebrate one of the many Albuquerque jazz players that SFMC will be presenting in the months ahead.
