“A New Mexico Jazz Festival Event”

An Exclusive SFMC Platinum Series Concert

Seven-time Grammy-nominated percussionist, US Artists Fontanals Fellow, and 2013-2014 SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, John Santos, is one of the foremost exponents of Afro-Latin music in the world today. Raised in the Puerto Rican and Cape Verdean traditions of his family, he was surrounded by the fertile musical environment of the San Francisco Bay Area that played a large part in shaping his unique career. He currently still lives and works in the Bay Area, where he has received numerous awards and honors for artistic excellence and social dedication. Widely respected as one of the top writers, teachers and historians in the field, Santos was a member of the Latin Jazz Advisory Committee of the Smithsonian Institution and is currently on the faculty of the California Jazz Conservatory (Berkeley, CA), San Francisco State University, Jazz Camp West (since 1986), and the College of San Mateo (CA). He has played and recorded with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to The Buena Vista Social Club, and many more in between. The John Santos Sextet, formed in 2003, performs Classic Latin Jazz from Cuba, Puerto Rico, the US, and other Latin American sources as well as original compositions and highlights the historical and cultural significance of Latin Jazz as well as its aesthetic - instrumentation, rhythm, interpretation and improvisation. The Sextet boasts a remarkable legacy of studio recordings that have earned them the respect of international radio programmers, peers and the public. Their newest (6th) project, The Art of Descarga with the legendary Smithsonian Folkways label, highlights the spontaneous, improvisatory interplay that is the beating heart of Latin jam sessions. It’s John Santos, congas, percussion; John Calloway, flute, percussion; Charlie Gurke, saxophones; Marco Diaz, piano; Saul Sierra, bass; and David Flores, drums. Brought to you in Partnership with Outpost Productions and The New Mexico Jazz Festival, this concert is a “SFMC FIRST” in our Platinum Series. It is our first world class “Latin Jazz” concert, presented to you at the beautiful new UNIT “B” @ Chocolate Maven.

The John Santos Latin Jazz Sextet is also performing in Albuquerque, at The Albuquerque Museum Amphitheater on Friday, September 6th, at 7pm.
