Samantha Fish, one of the most dynamic guitarists of her generation, unleashes her boldest work yet with Paper Doll, a raw and defiant album fueled by emotional depth, powerhouse performances, and newfound clarity. Following a Grammy nomination for Death Wish Blues and opening for The Rolling Stones, Fish teamed up with her touring band and producer Bobby Harlow to craft nine genre-blending tracks that reflect her growth as both a guitarist and vocalist. Recorded during a hectic tour schedule, the album channels the intensity of the live stage into its recordings, blending blues, rock, soul, and punk. With themes of resilience, self-possession, and feminist defiance, Paper Doll showcases Fish’s commanding voice and explosive guitar work, capturing her desire to tell deeply personal stories while building an unforgettable live arsenal.
Before joining forces, the duo behind Sgt. Splendor were already formidable solo artists, Kate Vargaschalking up acclaim at outlets like NPR, HuffPost, SPIN, No Depression Rolling Stone and Vice (includingpraise from the “Dean of American Rock Critics” Robert Christgau);and Eric McFadden amassing an impressive resume including stints on guitar with George Clinton & theP-Funk All Stars, Anders Osbourne, Fishbone’s Angelo Moore, and Eric Burdon & The Animals, plus aslew of solo albums, and session workand gigs with everyone from Jackson Browne to The Clash’s JoeStrummer.Sgt Splendor’s 2nd release, “Death of the Hoochie Koo” dropped May 19th on Buena Vista WestRecords.“Tom Waits’ music has always been a point of connection for me & Kate. While ourmusical approachesdiffer, they’re also kindred and share a lot of common elements. Our Southwestern upbringing comesthrough—that sort of mysteriouso desert thing—but also a carnivalesque Waits-ian vibe. The new recordis a bit more cohesive but still eclectic. Kind of an Alt-Funk, Desert Roots, Dirty Blues, Rock thing. Ourstyles have always been complementary.” Vargas concurs: “Sgt. Splendor really feels like a combinationof both of us—equally.”“...In the ten new songs, not only do the amazing vocals andskillful guitar playing of the two musicianscomplement each other very well, but alt-funk, desert rock and dirty blues also merge seamlessly. Groovyand brooding, mysterious and memorable–this is hot music with cool cover art.”-Dennis / Add To Want-list 2023
