Felix Mendelssohn wrote his remarkable String Symphony No. 12 during his teenage
years, a work that is both captivating and a glimpse of the genius yet to come. From the
joyful exuberance of Holst's St. Paul's Suite and Nielsen's Little Suite to the noble
beauty of Sibelius's Andante Festivo and the sparkling virtuosity of Elgar’s Serenade for
Strings, enjoy a morning showcasing the warmth, brilliance, and expressive range of the
NMPhil string section in music spanning two centuries.

Richard Strauss, at the precocious age of 17, composed his Serenade with the influences of Mendelssohn and Mozart in mind, while already finding his own distinctive voice. Hear this remarkable early work performed by the brass and woodwind sections of your NMPhil. Also discover, perhaps for the first time, Émile Bernard's sublime Divertissement, a hidden gem of the wind repertoire. The program also celebrates the brilliance and versatility of brass ensemble music, from JaRod Hall's exhilarating Silver Fanfare and Allen's stirring arrangement of Bach's beloved "Little" Fugue to Crees's vibrant setting of Ives's Variations on "America." Bruce Broughton's Fanfares, Marches, Hymns, & Finale brings the concert to a thrilling conclusion with a colorful tribute to the rich traditions of American brass writing.

Haydn: Symphony No. 44, “Mourning”

Beethoven: Symphony No. 1

Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven stand as three towering figures of the Classical era, each building upon the achievements of the last. Opening with Mozart's sparkling Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, the program continues with Haydn's poignant Symphony No. 44, nicknamed “Mourning” because the composer wished its slow movement to be performed at his own funeral. The concert culminates with Beethoven's First Symphony, a remarkable work that honors the Classical traditions of his mentors while revealing the bold musical voice that would forever transform the symphonic genre.

Johann Sebastian Bach composed more than 200 cantatas, many written on a weekly basis for the Lutheran services he directed in Leipzig. This delightful spring program reveals the remarkable breadth of his artistry, from the timeless beauty of the Air on the G String and the brilliance of his Fourth Orchestral Suite to two contrasting cantatas: the virtuosic Cantata No. 51 and the charming, lighthearted “Coffee Cantata,” one of Bach's most entertaining secular works.
