On Friday, August 15th, Mama Mañana Presents welcomes Pearl Charles and her band to The Marigold Room. They'll be on their way to play King Gizz's Field of Vision festival, and this is your only opportunity to see them in the southwest! With support from local favorite, Lily Pinto!
Pearl Charles lives in the moment, seeking excitement—whether it leads her down a dark, dusty road or into the arms of a trouble-making lover. Her songs describe late-night revelry, love affairs, running away and running toward, serenading the sunrise through whirlwind stories of her native Los Angeles: the city, the canyon, the desert, and the road.
On a quest to discover the truest version of herself, Charles embraces the feeling of not being settled—a person who always restlessly wants more from life and is willing to chase it, wherever it may lead her.
Charles has been playing music since she was five years old. At eighteen, she formed the country duo The Driftwood Singers with Christian Lee Hutson, singing and playing guitar and autoharp. At twenty-two, she joined the garage rock band The Blank Tapes as a drummer. After two fun-filled years immersed in the rock-and-roll lifestyle, she decided it was time to pursue her own songwriting and began developing the tracks that would form her 2015 eponymous debut EP.
Drawn to poppy hooks and catchy choruses, Charles takes inspiration from the best of the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s while crafting her own distinctive style as a solo artist.
In 2018, Pearl released her debut album, Sleepless Dreamer, which Rough Trade described as "the best country pop we've heard in years," and BuzzFeed called her "a modern June Carter meets Lana Del Rey." With the release of her follow-up, Magic Mirror, and subsequent singles, Pearl continues to lean into her own brand of country-disco.
"As if Tom Petty were riding shotgun, Charles and band capture a certain Southern California essence.” — LA Times
"Bursting with blues-rock and blissed-out psychedelia.” — Pitchfork
