Panel Description: At a time when Native artists are gaining more and more recognition nationally across the United States, join the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture for a discussion with Mvskoke artists Joy Harjo (first ever and three time U.S. Poet Laureate) and nationally acclaimed filmmaker Sterlin Harjo (Rez Dogs, This May Be the Last Time), as well as representatives of Oce Vpofv (Hickory Ground) for a discussion of how art and storytelling can be used to preserve who we truly are as Native people. As contemporary Mvskoke storytellers, the work of Joy and Sterlin Harjo defies stereotypes and challenges American preconceptions about who Natives are today in American society. Both traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, this fall to participate in Muscogee Creek Nation's Journey for Justice, a Movement to save one of the Nation's most significant ceremonial grounds and burial sites: Oce Vpofv. As the government and courts continue to fail to uphold laws like the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), this panel will explore how Native artists, Ceremonial Grounds, and grassroots communities share their stories and demand justice in an effort to save the most sacred of sacred.

This RSVP page is for overflow seating only. If you have already reserved a seat in the main auditorium, no further action is needed.
