Saxophonist Glenn Kostur and vocalist Hillary Smith have been making music together for more than two decades in a wide array of settings, from the big band sounds of the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra to Chillhouse, one of Albuquerque’s favorite blues groups. For this concert, they come together to celebrate another musical pairing, that of Cannonball Adderley & Nancy Wilson. Adderley and Wilson first performed together when Wilson sat in on one of Cannonball’s gigs at the 502 Club in Columbus, Ohio. That chance meeting led to a 1962 classic jazz album— simply titled, Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley— which has been a favorite of musicians and fans ever since. Revisiting that classic album, Smith and Kostur will also explore the rich catalog of music that Wilson and Adderley produced independently of each other. The quintet will be rounded out by Jim Ahrend, piano; Milo Jaramillo, bass; and a recent transplant from the Bay Area, drummer David Flores.  Hillary Smith is one of the most recognized voices in New Mexico. A recent inductee into the New Mexico Music Hall of Fame, she has been an integral part of groups like the award-winning hONEyhoUSe, Soul Kitchen, and Chill House, and has shared the stage with jazz artists including Max Roach, Houston Person, Kevin Hayes, Joshua Redman, and Nicholas Payton.  Glenn Kostur is a familiar face at Outpost, appearing over the years with the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra, SuperSax New Mexico, Certified Organic, and host of other jazz and Latin jazz groups. Serving as the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of New Mexico for nearly three decades, he has mentored hundreds of young musicians in their journey to discover their place in jazz.
