Son Como Son, which bills itself as Salsa, Cuban Style, is one of Albuquerque’s longest-standing and most popular salsa ensembles. Directed by renowned trombonist, vocalist, percussionist, composer, and arranger César Bauvallet, originally from Havana, Cuba, Son Como Son was founded in 1993 and they have since played regularly to packed audiences at the NM Jazz Workshop’s Salsa Under the Stars Series and many venues and events throughout the state. In addition to Bauvallet, the group features Kanoa Kaluhiwa, tenor sax; John Simms, Trumpet, background vocals; Mary Wommack, piano; Janet Harman, bass, background vocals; Víctor Rodríguez, bongos, lead vocals; Loren Lujan, lead vocals; Tomás White, drums; Ricky Carrido congas; and Danilo Bauvallet timbales.
D’DAT, led by improvisational trumpeter Delbert Anderson, a Native New Mexican who hails from the Diné/Navajo Tribe, is a multicultural group fusing uniquely American musical traditions of the native Southwest with jazz, funk and hip-hop. Also featuring touring artist and drummer Khalill Brown; keyboardist Robert Muller and groove bassist Mike McCluhan, D’DAT has been featured on the New York Times, Grammy.com, in JazzTimes Magazine, on NPR, and on SiriusXM and TEDx. Anderson’s wide-ranging activities and his band have garnered awards from the Western Arts Alliance, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and Chamber Music America.
New Mexico’s own, renowned tenor saxophonist Doug Lawrence, plays Summerfest 2023 with his esteemed New Mexican bandmates – Steve Figueroa, piano/organ; Paul Gonzales, trumpet; Terry Burns, bass; Ricky Carrido, congas and David Flores, drums – a group he has dubbed his Nuevo Mexicanos band. This performance will feature new material and originals played in the same hard bop and Latin jazz style they are known for, with an emphasis on groove, blues and melodies. Raised in New Mexico, Doug Lawrence spent over 25 years in New York City, performing and recording with iconic artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder and many others. For the last 20+ years, he has been the featured tenor saxophone soloist with the multi-Grammy® award-winning Legendary Count Basie Orchestra.
